II International Scientific and Practical Seminar in Samarkand

Prospects of Reviving the Endangered Carpet Weaving Traditions of Uzbekistan

On April 8–9, 2025, the II International Scientific and Practical Seminar titled “Prospects of Reviving the Endangered Carpet Weaving Traditions of Uzbekistan” was held in Samarkand. The event was organized by the “Silk Road” International Research Institute under the “Silk Road” International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage.

The seminar became an important platform for discussing the preservation and revival of Uzbekistan’s traditional carpet weaving.

The program included: • An exhibition of works by artisans and weavers from various regions of Uzbekistan, showcasing the richness and diversity of Uzbek carpet traditions; • Presentations by scholars and experts from Uzbekistan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and China; • A roundtable with the participation of carpet masters and designers.

The seminar aimed to draw attention to the traditions of Uzbek carpet weaving, support the creation of the “Uzbek Carpet” brand, and promote the involvement of women in the production of authentic carpets through home-based work. The event had both scientific and social dimensions, focused on preserving cultural identity and supporting the national economy through the development of traditional hand-made carpet production. It marked a significant step in reviving endangered types of traditional carpets.

On April 8–9, 2025, within the framework of the seminar, memorandums of cooperation were signed between the “Silk Road” International Research Institute and the “Hunarmand” Association of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as with Beijing City University. These agreements open new opportunities for academic exchange and collaboration between local and international experts.

The events were dedicated to the anniversary of the Institute, which also featured the presentation of three publications. These included the materials from the 2024–2025 I International Scientific and Practical Symposium on the Study and Preservation of the Tangible Cultural Heritage of the Silk Road, as well as the I and II International Scientific Seminars on the Revival of Traditional Types of Crafts.
